    While we're at it, can we have someone make a definitive statement about this abomination as well: updation.

    Adding -ate does not make it a new verb. Do doctors "treatate" patients?

    Create, hydrate, ingratiate, sedate, m*****bate, dedicate, exfoliate - OK as verbs.
    Orientate - NOT OK.

    I'm about to orient my browser away from M-W.

    You are correct. Orient is already a verb. "I will orient the bench toward the west." Adding "-ate" is redundant. Well, guess we told them.
